In 1983, esig+, mandated by the Swiss Institute of Packaging (SVI), opened a department of packaging science offering a 3-year training leading to the technical engineer degree in packaging and logistics. Ten years later, esig+, which was a private institute, had to stop the training of packaging engineers momentarily after conferring 69 degrees.
In 1994, esig+ and the Packaging Laboratory (LEC) were certified ISO 9001 / EN29001. Since January 1998, esig+ and two other engineering schools of Vaud have merged into a university level engineering school called University of Applied Sciences Vaud (EIVD). In February 1998, the Packaging Laboratory moved to the EIVD site located in Yverdon and merged with the mechanical engineering department.
Moreover, EIVD takes place in the University of Applied Sciences West Switzerland (HES-SO). HES-SO, created in 1996 and operational from 1998, allows a best use of the resources coming from the Universities of Applied Sciences located in West Switzerland. Afterwards, the EIVD and the HEG, Economics and Business School Vaud generate the HEIG-VD, School of Business and Engineering Vaud.
In 1998, the LEC is a founding member of the Excellence Group “Food Production & Environmental – and Chemical Technologies” (Real Tech) and one year later, the LEC is also a founding member of the R&D Mechanical designs, Materials, Packaging Institute (COMATEC) within the EIVD and become COMATEC-LEC.
In 2003, the Packaging Laboratory is certified ISO 9001:2000 by the Swiss Association for Quality and Management Systems (SQS).
